ARTIST STATEMENT

When I tell people I take photos...

They always ask me what I shoot. I find this question distressingly difficult. I always wish they could just see the photos and decide for themselves. Black and white or color? Why both, of course. Color is often earned, but for sure, not always. People? Yes, but sometimes walls, and nails… sometimes mood or texture, maybe a toilet. I cannot define a theme in my photos any more than I can make a list of who I am. Honestly, and this isn’t meant to sound artistic or haughty, I don’t feel a need to. Just as we classify basketball players into guards and centers, singers into baritone and bass, painters into cubist and abstractionist, we classify photographers: essayist, journalist, surrealist... portraits, nature, sports… urban, classical, commercial. At times, we just play, or sing, or paint. Let someone else label me, or fail to. I don’t take particular pride in my eclecticism. I love when people see themes in my work; it gives me clarity and insight into a subject that has always confounded me: how have I picked these subjects? Perhaps you know, perhaps you can tell me a bit about me.
