Adam,
As a photographer and owner of 5 Schwinns, I both love great bike photos and know that the shadow of America's once-great biking industry looms over Chicago. Just wanted to say that I really like that photo of the old bike you have as a fade-out under your Bio page. I was looking for that under Modes of Transportation but couldn't find it. Also checked a couple other galleries. Is it to be found here somewhere? ... With work like this, why did you bother going to med school, too? JK of course... I understand the multiple passions thing. Regards, David

Adam,
It is your second favorite patient from Children's. Ha ha. I love your photos, they are amazing. I know so much more about you from your stories, and your photos. I really do not know how you traveled so much considering you are a resident. Although, I do understand the police story because you are someone to make a comment like that to a police offficer, but that is what makes you unique. Have fun with your photography, and keep up the good work when you go to San Fran. I hope to see you again before you leave Childrens, but if I don't I will keep in touch.

Ad,
I browsed through the gallery again. Very impressive work. I wish you had a shot of me in the mix. I figure that a 25-year friendship may deserve a little Kodak moment for the gallery. Just kidding. Best of luck with the upcoming show. Your Friend, Mark

Hi Adam I don't know if you remember me, we met in the desert of Merzouga. Your photos are very great! I remember you taking photos in the desert but I didn't see them in your book. Maybe you're too busy with all your jobs! I hope you will answer me.

You cannot chose who to love.
Half of the leaves departed from The branches yesterday and tomorrow The trees will be completely empty. Still, you stutter through the crowd On the train car, searching for a seat. It's the constant battle against what You cannot control. Barbed wire Blocking your view of the clouds. A locked gate between yourself and The mountains. What you know is The handful of dirt that is geography. What you need to learn is the kernel Of sand in your palm that is time. Half of the sky was home to The clouds yesterday and tomorrow Snow will be bedding down with Everything. The tap digs into the stage Powdering dust through the spotlight. The brush swims across other colors, Other textures. The snares sizzle at The backdoor of the drum and you Suddenly wonder how you could have Missed the sun singing through The clouds. In the foreground Is a fence, in the distance Is a field of flowers you never knew Existed. Half of the buds On the branches sprouted yesterday And tomorrow the trees will be Laughing with leaves. When love arrives You will need to speak softly. When Love arrives you will be ready.

Greetings from [not so] sunny England. I'm truly impressed by your gallery. I've only recently become interested in photography and I'm wondering whether you'd recommend taking a course or just going with my instincts and capturing what I deem to be the perfect shot?

Nice website. I'm impressed. How in the world do you have time to visit all these foreign places while in residency?! More power to you. Melissa

hey...
I just wanted to say a great big thanks for taking the time to shoot with Dot & I.... WE LOVE THE PHOTOS that you sent so far....and I quote....today....before you even sent the photos to us...dot came into my room and said, " Jesus, I just went to Adam's site and he's a sincerely great photographer." I agree...and Dot never says shit like that...serioulsy...she ain't no Steppford wife... I also read your journal entry about the cops....my god!!! I had no idea when you told me that you were detained that it was so violent....or not violent....but serious......I just thought that held you for a while in your car and were just being cautious but pleasant.....but he was serioulsy accostic (spelling?).... I would have gone nuts...and it would have screwed me in the end....but I would have gone nuts....I would have given him the whole "the terrorists are winning if you let them make you this paranoid." speech... and if that made him mad I would have given him the whole "what's a matter busting REAL criminals is just too boring for you...or maybe you're too scared to go down to Ashland and 74th and find some real criminals"... I don't know...I'm fuming now.... but to digress back to the positive...thanks for the session...I can't wait to see the results...and I had a GREAT time at the fire too...I owe you a 24 oz. Corona.. things, duenow

Hi Adam,
What a beautiful website. I love your pictures of Katrina and Ohad, but my favorite is Valencian Night. To me it captures why every "proud to be an American" type needs to get the hell out of the US and visit Europe. Oh and I love the Chicago Towers....very very cool. And how does one get a llama to pose? Anyway, congrats on a beautiful body of work. Meta

Hi Adam,
Well done I really enjoyed your website. I personally think photography demonstartes the basic truth. And the photographer has invisible frame behind the eyes which constantly composes photos. By the way, my favourites are yellow porches in Valencia and chicago. They both seem quiet extreme since one being B & W and other being coloured. However, each has different illustration, in terms of choosing a precise vantage point. The composition is well balanced, light seems to be natural and creates contrast. Keep up the good work

Hi Adam -- sad to hear about you lame travails with Chicago PD. I've posted some extra info on PhotoPermit, http://www.photopermit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=57 -- Cynthia Bathurst is the chairman of the CPD District 18 Advisory Committee, have you (or an att'y) spoken to her? I hope you send those twits a URL to your "patriotism" gallery.
What about your power-station photos? :) On your galleries, I like the consistent use of selective focus -- even in shots where the focus is deep, there are large areas of blank open space (or fog), isolating the contrasty subject. A deliberately-developed theme, or just an idiocyncracy of your compositional choices? cheers, KB

Hello all...
Before tonight I could not really claim that the post September 11th atmosphere had affected me as a photographer, but that quickly changed. I was driving down Larabee tonight and stopped and pulled into the police parking lot to take photos of the sun setting behind the power lines of an adjacent power station. (I think the actual photos probably are pretty bad ironically). I took 2 or 3 photos and then hopped back into my car and left the lot. I turned left drove one block and saw flashing lights behind me. I pulled over and asked him if I had made a moving violation and he said no, but what was I thinking of taking photographs of a power station from a "private land" no less. I told him that I simply thought it was pretty that I am a photographer and that was what I was doing. He told me that what I was doing was highly illegal and that he should arrest me. I told him that I did not think it was illegal. I also mentioned to him that I was a doctor at Children's Memorial Hospital. He was pleased by that. He was very condescending about how I had no common sense doing what I was doing. I told him again that I thought what I had done was legal. He said if you say that again I will lock you up. I said I am sorry officer. He took my licence, both my photography and my doctoring business card and returned to his vehicle. He came back and told me they were going to let me go once they spoke to Children's and confirmed that I work there. (Warning to all of you who are not doctor's your time will be more difficult, in this story it will be a common theme that my being a doctor 'saved' me). I thanked him and asked him if I could get his badge number and name before I left. He immediately told me to get out of the car and put my hands on his hood. He cuffed me and frisked me and brought me to the station and placed me in the holding block. He said he was arresting me for criminal trespassing (the police parking lot that is). In the station he came out and told me his commander wanted to give me a break because I was a doctor, but none of this would have happened if I wasn't so arrogant and didn't go running my mouth. I told him that I did not swear at him, I did not raise my voice, I simply asked him for his name and badge number and as I would give my name to any patient I would expect him to do the same. He said I threatened him and I said no I simply asked you name and badge number and he said for what and I said for whatever I chose to use it, I have a right to know who pulls me over. At that he stood up said that's it you're coming in and went again to talk to his commander and back out he came 15 minutes later to release me because I was a doctor and the commander wanted to give me a break and then he started being real nice "so you're a shutterbug?" "well next time just come in here and ask permission first." Well, while I appreciate the conversation, I was still upset about being unlawfully harrassed and detained. Either police truly don't understand the laws they are supposed to be enforcing or they just don't care.... Here is an important link regarding what rights as photographer, written by a lawyer from Oregon.... http://www.krages.com/ThePhotographersRight.pdf I have called both the Sun Times and the Tribune and will be discussing this with some lawyer friends. I filed an official complaint with the CPD. I wonder how they would have treated me if I had told them I was unemployed or if I were arab? Thanks for listening.... Adam |
